For The John Gillam Company Ltd. Running Events Take on a Completely Different Meaning

In 2002 and 2003 while training to run a marathon in Rome, Italy, Millie Ward and John Gillam, III had time on their long training runs to think about many things. In March of 2004 they ran the Rome Marathon and in the spring of 2004 John's daughter was married at Point of Fork, her grandparent's home on the James River in Fluvanna County, Virginia. The things about which they thought while running in 2002 and 2003 forged the founding of the Outer Banks Relief Foundation, Inc. [*] and The John Gillam Company Ltd. LLC.

After the wedding at Point of Fork in Virginia, John's daughter's mother-in-law told John, "John, you have made every part of this wedding so easy you ought to go into the business." She said this one too many times and in the summer of 2004 The John Gillam Company Ltd. became a limited liability corporation.

Naming their company was an adventure in its on right. While running around Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, training for yet another race, Millie and John decided to name their company Understandings. They were delighted with the name until Millie went home and told her elder son. He said, "Mama, Understandings sounds like the name of a psychotherapy clinic."

They continued their training runs always discussing at some point during their runs the name of their company and their non-profit foundation. In the late spring on an early morning run John told Millie, "Last night Muffin and I were talking some more about the name of our company. Because of my past public service in the North Carolina House of Representatives, whether you like me or not, people in North Carolina and Tidewater Virginia know me, for better or worse. Why don't we capitalize on this, and name the company John Gillam?"

The John Gillam Company Ltd. is a full service event planning company who is based on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and has access to properties and does business in Naples, Florida and at Point of Fork Plantation in Fluvanna County, Virginia. "We create a budget and a timeline for each of our clients. Just recently we implemented the twenty-second draft of a client's budget and the thirty seventh draft of a client's timeline. It is time consuming and we give each of our clients many hours above that for which we are paid. By doing so we meticulously are able to assure our clients that their approved budgeted money is spent wisely and that their event itself will be memorable and successful," concluded John Gillam.
